Hurrah for the Julies
Bindel and Burchill, that is. Julie Burchill for writing (finally) a story about young women falling in love with one another, which will be on telly next week, and Julie Bindel for writing a funny and appealing article in today’s Guardian about it. (Although actually, hurrah to Julie BIndel for far far more than that - not least for being one of the most consistent feminist voices in the UK today).
Let’s just hope Sugar Rush isn’t the same old evil/dead lesbian cliche again.

I’ve always thought that Julie Bindel was one of the most intelligent commentators on gender issues and the roots of violence against women. But her recent opinion piece on vegetarianism is so unthought through and reactionary that it really belongs in the Mail not the Guardian. I’m not a vegetarian myself (any longer), but the fact that she treats so cursorily our ethical obligations to other sentient beings, and that she fails to make any attempt to consider a possible link between violence against women/people and treating animals as objects rather than beings, renders her article intellectually vacuous at best, and at worst an offensive rant.
