Katrina

I can’t do justice to the full horror of what’s unfolding on our TV screens, so I won’t try. But if it were possible to hate Bush more than I did before, I do.

Earlier, I saw him on Good Morning America pretty much saying that private property was more important than staying alive, juxtaposed with a woman screaming about a baby dying in the convention centre because there is no food, no milk and no water.

From Eschaton (via Dragonballyee)

Reporter: Regarding the president’s zero tolerance for insurance fraud, looting, price gouging. Does he make any allowance for people who have yet to receive aid who are taking things like water or food or shoes to walk among the debris?
(White House spokesperson) McClellan: I think you heard from the president earlier today about his zero tolerance. We understand the need for food and water and supplies of that nature. That’s why we have a massive effort underway to continue getting food and water and ice to those who are in need. There are ways for them to get that help. Looting is not the way for them to do it.

From TPMCafe, also via Eschaton, on why the rich got out but not everyone could:

Lots of people in that area - the poor and the old and the sick - get checks from the government on the 1st of the month. They spend for the month with that money, so by the end of the month they are broke.
The storm hit on the 29th.
Many people could not afford the $50 to fill their gas tanks to leave. The interviewee said they people were begging him to please loan them the money for gas. They were forced to stay, and forced to stay when they were broke.

    Hi Antonia,

Love your blog by the way.

I agree, the whole place has gone nuts, I read a news article this morning that said the hospitals are running out of water, food, oxygen and insulin and critically ill patients are dying of one by one.

Looters had looted gun shops, stealing rifles and amunition, and snipers were now targeting hospitals, doctors and ambulance drivers.

Meanwhile the police are protecting private property and aid is still ‘on it’s way’ rather than ‘being distributed.’

America is surposed to be the richest, most powerful and efficient country in the world, what the fuck is going on?
