David Milliband on Oxfordshire

Thanks to Tim for the link to David’s webchat on the Labour website - several other Labour members also make impasssioned pleas for single tier authorities:

John:
I understand that there is a plan to move local authorities to a single-tier system. While I agree that this is a most welcome idea, will the minister please take special care not to amalgamate provincial towns and cities with their rural neighbours? In Oxfordshire, the new Tory Council is riding roughshod over the wishes of Oxford city residents where Tories have no representatives on the District Council.

David Miliband:
Thanks for your point John. My article in Local Govt Chronicle in December set out the tests for any reorganisations, would be neighbourhood flexibility, strategic leadership and value for money. There are important issues in places like Oxford and it would be for local people to come forward with their ideas about how different systems might work - it is not my intention to impose a single system, county unitary or other, around the country.

This is also interesting:

Matthew:
Will you (please) stand against Gordon Brown in the forthcoming leadership contest?

David Miliband:
No - I think Gordon will be a really good leader. He has good values, real vision and excellent judgment.
