Zoe Williams on lad mags
Wanted to post a cross defence of Clare Curtis-Thomas’ bill to relegate lad mags to the top shelf after reading Zoe Williams’ piece of fluff in the Guardian yesterday. Turns out Fisking Central has done it already.

[...] All that, however is by the by as what I’m really interested in her is her ‘topshelf campaign‘, out of which, just this week, she’s scored herself a short op-ed piece in the Indy - which, amazingly, isn’t stuck behind their usual pay-per-view - plus a piss-poor fluff piece by Zoe Williams over at the Graun, which prompted this nicely constructed evisceration by Matt at Fisking Central (via Antonia). [...]
What’s the point of banning those mags when the Sun and all the rest of the trashy newspapers still have bare-breasted girls (Chloe, age 18) smiling out from the third page? Are they going to try to put these newspapers up on the top shelf too?
Piecemeal Tam, piecemeal. Part of the issue though is not banning this or banning that. Attitudes need to change and that will take a long while. The great thing about what Claire Curtis Thomas has done is that she has raised awareness on the fact that lads mags are basically remarketed pornography
How you can support this obnoxious woman is beyond me. Her recently discovered ‘feminism’ has to be contrasted with her Catholic reactionary views on ‘pro-life’ and faith schools. Indeed all things ‘Catholic’.
Even worse, Curtis-Thomas is the Parliamentary spokesperson for the historical child abuse denial movement of former children in care. Curtis Thomas is attempting to overturn the Governments response to the Home Affairs committee investigation into ‘investigations into historical child abuse’ in the care system. Her campaigning on behalf of former ‘care workers’, particularly in the North West is causing a great deal of suffering to hundreds of both men and women who suffered abuse in these Catholic run Institutions but have never taken action.
She adopts a most disparaging, almost ‘class racist’ attitude to adults who were formerly in care. You should not be fooled by her cheap opportunist attempt to gain feminist support via the lad’s mags issue, when her real purpose is far more obnoxious. Her and her friends have inveigled themselves inside a number of legitimate campaign groups in order to gain left/liberal sympathy for their cause. Even worse, if you listen to some of her strange bedfellows you would be horrified at their misogyny. Of course, it is only to be expected that the wishy washy liberals of East Oxford could fall for such a ruse.
P.Wack - I may be many things, but a wishy washy liberal I am not! Can you supply some links to back up your points?
