Nothing to do this Bank Holiday Monday?

BBC Parliament is replaying their 14 hours of live coverage of the 1997 election results, starting at 9am. (hat tip - Iain Dale, who oddly doesn’t seem as enthusiastic!)

I’m shocked into de-lurking! My God… who is gonna watch that?!

I think I’ll pass on this one. But I look forward to the 2009 general election coverage and seeing Labour MP after Labour MP defeated! ;)

the BBC often do this on bank holidays. OVer Easter it was 1992 with Alan Beith confidently saying that it meant Labour could never win again…

Even more interesting are the 60s and 70s coverage.

One for the political junkie / historian but surprisingly informative about how things have changed (or not) over time

In your dreams, Tim! It’s just occured to me that the only way actual activists like us ever get to watch election night coverage is when it’s replayed years later…

I’m glad to see you’re complacent about the next election Antonia. It’ll make it easier for us to beat you!

And not everyone gets to go the count - in 2005 I watched the programme in King’s SU bar and had great pleasure when just two Conservatives out shouted down fifteen loud Labourites after one particular result (Enfield Southgate) was declared.

Still the earlier ones can be very surprising, especially with knowledge of hindsight. Take a look at October 1974 where every other comment seemed to be about the social democratic wing of Labour breaking away. Or look at the very end of that one for a fantastic put down of O’Neill by Powell.

Not complacent, Tim; bullish. No way is this country losing a Labour government that’s achieved so much without one hell of a fight.

That government is being lost in the next few weeks when Blair finally resigns. Or is the coronation of Brown * going to just be change of ego?

(Well okay he may have to fight an election. But does anyone take the possibility of Prime Minister Meacher seriously?!)

Anyway regardless of whether you want to call this an old or a new government it will still be dominated by the same old micro manager and it’s clear from umpteen former Labour Cabinet Ministers that they expect Brown to be a disaster - why else has Blair held out so long?

As for achievement, sadly voters rarely reward what a party has done but instead look to what it will do next.

I only got to see the bit where Alan Duncan said “This will be a one term government” and predicted condescending that the newly elected MPs sitting in the like, like, er, Ruth Kelly, were politically naive and would not go far.

    Ha ha
