They’ve only gone and done it

Cllrs Paul Sergeant and Tia McGregor, having left the Lib Dems to become independents, are now set to become Tories, according to the Oxford Mail. So, Oxford’s not a Tory-free zone any longer.

My reaction is one of overwhelming disgust.

This is completely sickening but I also feel triumphant in a funny old way. I remember years ago arguing the guy was a total waste of space - whilst other Labour activits thought he was okay and wanted to win him over. Sargeant once tried to join Labour but his form got lost. What a happy mistake.

By the way, if you want a have a laugh, ask Paul in depth about his job. He basically seeks to pass himself off as a qualified teacher in a state school, but actually does a little bit of tution in a private crammer to supplement his soon to be nil Councillor’s allowance.

As for Tia MacGregor on a GPs salary she could pay the Council for the by-election herself!

In a by-election in Carfax 2004 - when Sargeant fell out with the Liberals after messing up their campaign Paul produced this ridicolous leaflet saying that “Only the Liberals can beat the Tories here”. The way that they ran their nasty dirty little campaign was utterly disrespectful to the late Mike Woodin whose tragic death had brought about the by-election - but happily the voters saw through it (and the Tory candidate got 75 votes!)

Whilst a overwhelmingly student in Oxford ain’t where I am going to be next May - helping Ken get re-elected and also making sure the BNP don’t get on the GLA are I guess a little more important but it’s kind off close! - I would happily pay good money to watch Sargeant’s face when he looses at the count next year. Can someone YouTube his defeat.

Isn’t there something just basically evil - I kid you not - evil - about imposing a Conservative Councillor on people who overwhelmingly rejected one at recent elections.

    Going nowhere. Ha ha ha.

    I second Bill’s “disgust” emotion.

Such treachery is something I cannot really get my head around. I remain a fried of McAndrews but can never really forgive or understand why someone doesn’t have what I would feel is the basic decency to put such a decision to the electorate. They are defrauding everyone - the parties that worked to get them there and the people who gave them their votes and trust.

And most of all it really highlights for me that some people just view politics as some kind of a game. And if it is a game, what are the voters reduced to?

While I don’t think elected representatives should jump ship to other parties I think using the word “evil” is a bit of a hysterical over-reaction. Child abuse is evil, genocide is evil, illegal wars are evil - two nonentities swapping their political allegiance is nothing more than an annoyance. Get over it.

So, Oxford’s not a Tory-free zone any longer.

    Hurrah!

I find this all utterly bizarre. Paul S’ decision is bad enough, but I can get my head around it. But Tia Macgregor? Her voting record, speeches and so forth put her squarely to the left of the Lib Dems. And then she joins the Tories.

    I’m just bemused!

Vote Lib Dem and get a free Tory, as my 2002 eve of poll said…

Louise, I know Bill used the word twice, but might I offer a different arrangement of the same letters that is probably more apt - v-i-l-e

    :)

    Jock - much better ;)

And I did forget to say after “Get over it” - the electorate will sort it all out in a year’s time.

The first post in this thread is very amusing. You would have thought Bill was talking about child molesters rather than a couple of councillors that barely anyone has heard of defecting to another party, and perhaps thereby causing a minor ripple on the usually still surface of Oxford’s gentle local politics.

    Get some perspective people.

Looking at some of the remarks, it is clear to me that voters in the area have been dooped easily by Ms MacGregor just like most acquaintances in her life. If any one had cared to know the Cllr a little closely, they would have found that the lady has the sincerity of a pit viper! She will befriend any one and everyone to get where she needs to be and then dismiss them with a flick of her head! What’s worse is that she will have everyone around her believe that she was either the victim or had no choice! It is unfortunate that we end up choosing insincere and hypocrites like this to be our representative; now would be a good time for constituents to wake up and demand that their mandate be lived up to or the Cllr come clean about her committments…
