Welcome to our newest recruit
Cllr Shah Jahan Khan today decided it was time to leave the shower that is the minority ruling Liberal group on Oxford city council, and join Labour. The scores on the doors are now Labour 19, Lib Dems 15, Green 8, IWCA 4, Tories 2.

From Sean Gabb - “I answered that every politician I had ever met was human trash—the better ones were in the game for the money and sex; the rest were plodding control freaks.”
Which category I wonder, does this latest turncoat fall into? Poor Mumtaz is all I can say.
Why were you reading Sean Gabb, Jock? A cursory look at his pages make him appear a loon…
Someone posted a clip of him dissing the Live 8 concerts last year so I’ve dabbled a bit. He does seem like a moonbat - not the sort of person with whom I would want to be associated as a libertarian/mutualist. But as you see he has rather forthright views on politicians which have got me wondering whether I would want to stand again, and why others do and what they get out of it, really.
They are apparently offering odds on who the next defection to Labour will be.
Patrick Murray leads the field at evens. Stephen Tall is 2-1. Gwynneth Royce is 4-1. David Rundle is 5-1.
Stuart Craft is a snip at 200-1.
Well when I voted for him, I was hoping for a liberal democrat so frankly, this comes as something of a disappointment. Has he given a reason?
I want to know my odds!
Matt
None of these people ever give “reasons” that stand up to scrutiny, only pallid excuses for petty treachery.
In all of these cases, the thing that irks me the most is that they apparently haven’t even had the courtesy to discuss their supposed issues within the group or local party before announcing their departure to the local rag, which to me says that they don’t regard “party” as anything other than a means to an end. Even if they don’t feel they can approach the group leader, which would be a sad situation, if they don’t voice their concerns to anyone at all, one can hardly take them seriously as anything other than convenient soundbite to try to excuse their actions.
Good luck to them. I don’t suppose I’ll ever understand the mindset of a defector properly. I was taught manners and honour…:) If I felt that bad I hope I would either put up or shut up, but not slink away.
For we went, changing our party more often than our shoes.
Vote Liberal get Labour
Vote Labour get Digby Jones
Have Labour got Digby Jones? Terrific! I didn’t realise. Why did they bury that news then?
There are certainly some people for whom party is not a significant issue. And to be rather brutal iun local government terms with largely managerial responsibilities it doesn’t necessarily make that much difference.
Cllr Khan may simply want to be in the competent party with a better record on Equality and diversity. Which is fair enough.
But even if it is a political choice. Lib Dems don’t actually do politics after all do they? Apolitical. So perhaps Khan wants some people around him who are nice and do politics?
If you really believe that the Lib Dems are ‘the shower that is the minority ruling Liberal group on Oxford city council’ it does raise the question of why Labour didn’t attempt to take control when you had the chance earlier this year.
apparently i’m evens. flattered as i am to come top of the poll but sorry to disappoint but it ain’t gonna happen…
