What job should I do?

I have a job, which I like very much. But jdc did a quiz to find out what sort of job he should do, and posted his answers, so I thought I’d do it too.
Here’s my top ten occupations:

1.Probation / parole officer
2.Industrial-organizational psychologist
3.Human resources specialist
4.Foreign service officer
5.Association manager
6.Rehabilitation counselor
7.Politician
8.Lobbyist
9. Corporate / commercial lawyer
10. Psychologist

What is it about my profile that always brings up law enforcement roles at the top of the list? I clearly remember seventeen year-old me being distinctly perturbed when the mid-nineties clunking careers database suggested that my ideal occupation was to be a prison officer… If you’re interested, what I actually do is a mix of 8, 30 (communications specialist), and 32 (public policy analyst) in one half of my life, with a bit of 7 thrown in during evenings and weekends.

number 3 is particularly shrewd, though not as good as number 36 (Tour Guide).

I was disappointed not to get airline pilot as one of the options suggested.

But your Oxford Council Board job is on Monday mornings, when you don your politician’s hat surely!

  4. Phoebe Harcourt | 16 September 2007 9:13 pm

    Public policy analyst…what’s that?

Hey Antonia- how can you be both politician and lobbyist? As a lobbyist are you lobbying yourself as politician? Or are you lobbying your employer? Ha ha.

Thought this might raise a few laughs. Yours is pretty accurate, Tim, though I’m bemused by what you said you liked doing that would put two translation jobs so far up. Don - well, that seems about right to me, though the sports thing is indeed weird.

Jane - you’re right, of course, was a slip of the keyboard. Executive Board is indeed on Monday mornings, something which I resent massively, as I firmly believe that it should be possible to be a councillor out of full-time work hours. The alternative is that you get councils full of non-working people (usually retired).

Phoebe - a public policy analyst is someone who thinks and writes about how society, institutions and government services and policies work and how they could be improved. People who do this job work in charities and lobby groups, thinktanks, universities, corporates, political parties and the civil service.

Gregg - I keep my roles completely separate, and don’t ever lobby the institution of which I’m a member. As it happens, I don’t have responsibility for lobbying individual councils or local government in general.

Hmm. Rose Hill: Cell Block H. It’s an intriguing thought, I suppose.

I think public policy analysts in american english have a slightly more statistical bias than we would be used to in British English. Well, that’s my excuse for it not coming higher up, anyway.

It’s interesting in mine that political aide should come so high up, and politician so far down. It’s absolutely right on that score, though. But how does it know?

I suppose the reason that law enforcement roles keep cropping is because as a socialist, you like to lock people up and ban things.

Please don’t make fun of prison officers. My brother is one, and he’s a fantastic person, loving husband and dad, and a great brother. He likes his way though and is a bit of a control-freak, but these are small failings!I am a house wife, and I like it very much!

Nicola - wasn’t making fun of prison officers, was making fun of the idea of me (scatty disorganised me) being one.

Mickey - it’s up to me what I put on my site. Thanks for staying reading.

    I got this:

    1. Lobbyist
    2. Rehabilitation Counselor
    3. Politician
    4. Sport Psychology Consultant
    5. Corporate / Commercial Lawyer
    6. Mediator
    7. Judge
    8. Criminologist
    9. Criminal Lawyer
    10. Civil Litigator

I’m actually a bit disappointed to be doing my number 1 job. That’s pretty irrational, isn’t it? But I was hoping they’d say “Lion tamer” or something.
