Labour candidates for Oxford city
Here in Oxford, we’re gearing up for our local elections once again, after our one year in four without elections in 2007 - when you have city council elections in two years out of four, plus county, general and European elections, you don’t get many years without an election! Oxford city council has two-member wards, with one councillor elected every two years. So, for example, I was elected in 2006 for Rose Hill and Iffley ward, and have two years still to go; my colleague Ed Turner was last elected in 2004, and will be seeking another four years this May.
Below is the full list of 24 Labour standard bearers hoping to restore local government in our city. (There are, of course, other candidates too: Greens and Tories in all wards; Liberals in all OxWAb wards, but, oddly, not all Oxford East wards; IWCA, Respect - not sure which flavour - and assorted independents in a few places. If you’re really interested, the full list is here).

Iffley Fields was a clerical error, no more, no less. No oddity.
And it’s Liberal Democrats by the way. We may be he true heirs of Britain’s liberal tradition, but the Liberal Party is a different creature. Still, it is a trait of New Labour to be patronizing, to the people as well as other parties I guess.
Is it patronising to call the Conservatives Tories, too? Or does it only apply to Liberal Democrats? Did you insist that chums addressed you by your full name at school?
The Respect candidate is the SWP flavour, though he is actually standing as an independent it seems.
Matt (on the final strait of councillordom)
I don’t have a problem with them calling us “Liberals” - we are. I hope they don’t have a problem being called something apt, like ZaNuLab.
According to my local LibDem councillor, Labour “gave up” control of Oxford council because they couldn’t cope… is that so? I would mail Beverley Hazell for her opinion but searching for her name only brings up your website (apart from a Wikipedia page from when she stood for Three Rivers council in 2002/3)…
Hi - I do apologise as I have found Beverley’s email address hidden away on her campaign flyer - it was hidden by her photo hence not seeing it - so shall mail her directly. Thank you.
Hi Chris,
It’s not awfully clear what Caroline would be referring to. The Lib Dems took control of Oxford city council in 2006 because they had the largest number of councillors after the last local elections in 2006. Over the past couple of years they managed to fall out with each other so badly that four of their councillors left the Liberal Democrats (two to Labour, two to the Tories). If anything, this is surely a sign that the Lib Dems found it tricky to cope with running the council?
It is certainly true that Labour have not even attempted to take control despite being the largest group (19 Lab to 15 LD).
Why would Labour want to take control when you can win an election simply be not being John Goddard? Amused to see that Lib Dems at the recent County Council meeting voted every which way but Goddard when asked to endorse his belated acceptance of city growth plans.
Just had that “little” runt Oscar knocking at the door, he didn’t even have the balls to say he was Labour. Just squeaked out “Hi I’m Oscar”
How did the BNP slur ‘Zanu Labour’ (i.e. blacks oppressing whites) become so popular in Liberal circles?
