Dear Editor,

Re: Michael Howard’s visit to Abingdon

Michael Howard is welcome to come to Oxfordshire to discuss anti-social behaviour, but it’s the Labour government that has been taking action against it. Since 2001, Labour’s investment in tackling crime and anti-social behaviour has paid for 346 more Thames Valley Police officers fighting crime.

In contrast, Michael Howard’s shadow chancellor is committed to slash £669 million per year from the Home Office budget. This would mean fewer police and fewer Community Safety Officers patrolling the streets and tackling anti-social behaviour, no extra help for witnesses and victims and no massive expansion in drug treatment places. We’d also lose Labour’s investment in stopping young people getting drawn into crime and anti-social behaviour in the first place.

And as for the Liberal Democrats, they opposed the Anti-Social Behaviour Act which has given real powers to local communities to tackle the yobs who make residents' lives a misery. If it were down to the Lib Dems, police would not have the power to disperse gangs, impose Anti-Social Behaviour Orders on the worst offenders or give curfews to people causing trouble late at night.

It’s often so-called "minor" crimes like graffiti, yobbish behaviour and vandalism are often those which cause the greatest distress – and it’s clear only Labour are committed to tackling them.
